SmartCache sounds interesting David,
I like the sound of its junk-banner filtering.

Any tips on setting it up?
What sort of processor would be required to run it?

I'm looking to use it with InJoy running NAT to provide a nice Internet
gateway solution.

NAT for most things, SmartCache for http proxy.
I'm using InternetGate at the moment & support from the developer is
non-existent, (I don't get replies to emails), & its not that good
anyway.

Has anyone tried M$ Portrait with Smartcache ? M$ Portrait is M$ Japans
cut down video conferencing program, which givewn a HTTP proxy, is
supposed to only need one port through the firewall (80, which is open
anyway). Even without the HTTP proxy, it uses fixed ports rather than
dynamic ones, that M$ Netmeeting does, making it effectively impossible
to use behind a firewall.

I tried it quite a while back,. it's GUI-less Java app, took next to
nothing to run.

Hi Voytek.

I am not running a server, or permanently online - only a dial-up.

I run SC and switch off NS disck cache. MUCH better, even though it's pure
Java.

Get it from Hobbes and have a look - It can run with other caches but I
haven't done that. My ISP doesn't proxy at the moment.

I'm running a whole lot of stuff here on a P166 processor, ET6000 video,
plenty of disk, and a humble 33.6 modem connection.

Kris I checked the IBM device driver site and it only mentions the Deskjet 970 and Deskjet 990c. Are you
sure the OMNI driver supports the Deskjet 960C as I am able to buy one here in Australia?

It's pretty simple:
- unzip it into a directory
- copy the sample configuration files into this directory
- Modify scache.cnf to set the "CacheRoot" to wherever you want the
actual cache store.
- If other machines are going to be using the cache, change BindAddress
to the IP address of the machine running SmartCache.
- start it with:
	java -ms1m scache
- Configure your browser to point to the machine that's running it (or
127.0.0.1 for the same machine) and port 8080.

There are reasonably good instructions in the configuration files for
what else should be done. All I have done is:
- changing the names that are displayed if something goes wrong.
- added a few "nocache" entries
- added a few things to fail.cnf to bar a few more ad sites
- set the size of my cache in gc.cnf

Also, the latest versions has a Rexx control script (start, stop,
garbage collection, etc) that looks pretty good. I haven't gotten
around to testing them, but will soon.

>What sort of processor would be required to run it?

It running on a Pentium Pro 200 with 96MB of memory. This is my
server/gateway and there isn't a monitor plugged in. It is the file
server for my network, runs InJoy dialer, and also has Apache and FTP
(only to my local machines), SETIatHome and DTOC running on it.
Performance of it all seems great. And until the monitor died, PMMail
and Netscape was OK on it as well.

Is InternetGate the one that will proxy just about anything? From
MaccaSoft or someone like that? If so, I remember trying it before
getting InJoy. At first glance, I was impressed, but, I don't think it
worked well either. InJoy with NAT seems to works a lot better.
Adding in SmartCache gets it pretty near perfect.

Hi ed

Of course the Virtual PC option would be great and more than acceptable. Your
email suggests that the product is either released or about to be released??
Happy to buy and try as I basically have a second HD for my Thinkpad on which I
do all my fiddling !! Do you know its status? Have you been to Europe and seen it
in action?

Sure for 100 % . My money-back guarantee. :-)

In the end, the 960 is exactly the same as the 970 but for one thing: the 970 has 2 Mb memory on board, the 960 has 8
Mb.
Incidentally, I'm running here a HP 980 Cxi with "970" drivers.

Hi David, Bob,
Re: XOSL - I downloaded v1.1.2 (the last "other OSs" version) and wondered if that's
the version you are using David? Only problems with it I found were that to boot a
logical partition (OS/2 of course), I had to use the "original [IBM BM] MBR",
otherwise I had a non-functioning boot - black screen - and one cannot nominate what
the boot drive-letter will be ('a la' System Commander). My XOSLOS logical
partition(78h) is a single cylinder- up around cylinder 2000. I didn't try any of the
M$-only later versions (yet).
Re:Air-Boot - v0.27b was the most recent(29 Jan) released, but the news page said that
0.28b would cater for the [LVM?]/BM method of determination of BIOS INT13 extensions
support. I haven't got around to trying 0.26b yet, but hope to do so in the next few
days.
Regards,
Mike
