Hello all

I am about to update a couple of the workstations at the office and the quotes all
include a mother board with inbuilt "everything" including LAn cards and PCI sound
.... I am happy to ue the LAN cards from the old machines which are 10/100 and
work well

but I would appreciate any advice about sound cards.... as far as I can work out the
usual chip is a VIA type 686B on MIS mother baords....does this sound right !?
(excuse the unintentional pun!).... I would like to enable sound in OS2 - so any
advice gratefully received..

My first bit of advice is to ensure you get a plain motherboard with NO
onboard peripherals.

Why ?

a) If something physically fails, its easy to swap a card.

b) MB intergrated peripherals are more inclined to be Win type parts,
ie, missing parts of hardware and replicated by Windows drivers.
This ensures it will not work for OS/2, or if it does, not to
well. Having the same chipset is not a sure thing it will work
    either :-(

c) Performance is normally better with a plugin card, even
though logical dictates it should be better for an onboard
    design..

d) Its easier to upgrade a part in the future (though a minor point)

"usual" chip means its "properly" not the one on your MB :-)

http://www.os2site dot com/sw/drivers/sound/via/

Could also be an Analog Devices, Crystal, or other companies
chipsets. Buying any MB with the peripherals is akin to playing
russian roulette unless you have windows.

I'm using a Via 686B on one of my systems. With the patches that have been released
for the Via drivers to enable shared interrupts, it works great - more than enough for my
simple needs. If something does go wrong with the onboard support, it's simple
enough to disable the onboard sound and add a PCI card.

I'd agree with Ian though - make sure you're getting what you think you're getting :)

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Paul

OK have downloaded the file that Ian sent me to! But not sure about the "patches"
where do I find these?

Have you any nmore detailed information Graham ? I'm looking at exactly the
same idea, a board with"everything" ie the normal IO (EIDE, Printer, USB,
PS/2 mouse, Comm etc.) plus Video, Audio and LAN. Some boards WILL cause
problems from an OS/2 viewpoint !

If you have an exact make and model number for the board, there may be a
spec sheet on the web we can look at.

We need to know the EXACT chipset partnumbers.

Here's a list (probably out of date now, that was in a download from hobbes
for the CMI8330 Audio PCI SoundPro chipset.

*************************************
README
*************************************

Here are all the OS/2 sound card drivers I could find on the web.
Where ever possible, I download the drivers from the chip
manufacturer's site, unless I could detect some significant differences
between the drivers (or I just wasn't sure :) ).

Obviously, I make no warranty, either expressed or implied, about any
of these drivers.

Since Hobbes pretty much insists on ZIP format archives, the driver archives
have been bundled into separate ZIPs with a copy of this README.

Graham,
Patch file located at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/util/viasp09c.zip

If you're not familiar with using a hex editor, I can send the pre-patched driver to you
directly.

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Ed

well there is one board

MIS n 6330 Lite

VIA KT133 Chip set with a VIA 686 Sound driver

although this mother board may well be out of date..

Graham and others,
I've made the patched Via driver available at
http://users.bigpond dot net dot au/psmedley/viaos2_v220b.zip

The patched driver is in the root directory with the other Via files as part of the installer,
the contents of Vit Timnisch's helper file from Hobbes in the help directory.

Hope this helps,

Paul.
