Melbourne PC SIG Meeting Report
To: G Taig Features Editor PC Update
CC: OS/2 SIG Members
Report Date: 3 Oct 2001 (approx 330 words)
Meeting Date: 25 Sept 2001
Report by: John Angelico (03) 9544 8792

Suddenly, we live in a different world, and Windows PCs were struck
by a savage new virus. So our planned coverage of Norman Virus
Control was somewhat prescient. 22 members and guests were gathered.

Early News
We began with a formal announcement of the eCS installation and
tune-up day on the coming Saturday 29th. Whilst we weren't trying to
cater for 90,000, we did encourage all members of the SIG to attend
(separate report below).

Discussion of eCS began with questions about the coverage afforded by
the Upgrade Protection Plan (details to be emailed on the list). We
had further questions regarding the Logical Volume Manager, and this
clearly represents the major concern of existing OS/2ers, generating
intense and useful discussion.

OS/2 Basics
Held over until next meeting

Protection
We welcomed special guest speaker Mark Karpinski of Capital Security
Solutions, the Australian representatives of Norman Data Security,
providers of Norman Virus Control. A "demo" version is included with
all eCS distributions, and Norman's released an update for Nimda on
their web site less than 48 hours after it was first recognised and
analysed.

Mark took us through the operation and basic features of Norman Virus
Control which is available for all platforms including Warp 4, Warp
Convenience Packs and eCS. He also explained the various types of
viruses, worms and trojan horses, and skillfuly analysed the level of
risk associated with the "payloads" of different threats to our
systems.

Whilst Mark demonstrated, questions came thick and fast, and it was
clear that protecting our systems was a very high priority for
members even though we enjoy natural immunity in a number of areas.
As responsible computer users we don't want to be passing infected
emails to our receivers without realising it.

At the close, all members enthusiastically expressed their
appreciation for Mark's presentation.

Saturday 29th eCS install and tune-up day
Mark Rogers of Orion Solutions scheduled a 3-hour drive each way to
support his clients in person. Whilst turnout was not fantastic on
Grand Final day, four complete installations were done, on complex
systems, and subsequent feedback is most positive.

Subject: [os2genau] Copying on-the-fly: CD-ROM->CD-R

Hi,
I just want to make an exact copy of a CD-ROM on-the-fly:
CD-ROM->CD-R

Can AudioCDCreator do this? How?

I looks like the only thing that will do this is RSJ?

I've spent a good part of today reading the complicated, verbose
documentation for CDRECORD & MKISOFS with no successful outcome.

Subject: [os2genau] A newbie's simple guide for connecting OatH to OS/2?
Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 20:38:43 +1000

Does such a guide exist?

Last night I installed OS/2 version 4 (the version that was given away
for free last year on the APC magazine disk) and I immediately updated
the OS by installing OS/2 Fixpack 5 which appeared on an APC magazine
disc from April 1998. I then added the following line to my
\mptn\etc\dhcpcd.cfg file:

Option 12 "COnnnnnnn-A"	# Host Name (cable customer ID)
(all the other options in this file were rem'ed by default)

However at boot up, the computer initialises the AOpen Ethernet adaptor,
and then waits for about 60 seconds while it attempts to make a
connection to the DHCP server at OatH. After this time I get a message
telling me it was unable to get the required information and that it
would continue to try in the background.

What am I doing wrong here. Does anyone else who reads this mail list
have an OS/2 box running with OatH. Is there some other fixpack that I
need to install in addition to Fixpack 5?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Stephen Anderson

Hi Stephen

I dont know if you are going to get this, as you seem to have unsubscribed
as soon as you sent this email ?? (I run the server)

>Does such a guide exist?

What is OatH ?  <== Optusathome ?

I must confess to never having used DHCP so I cant help you there.

>Is there some other fixpack that I need to install in addition to Fixpack 5?

I would upgrade to at least Fixpack 12 (FP12). If you are running
a Pentium faster than 200Mhz, I would install FixPack 15 (FP15), and
the device driver pack 2 (DD2). FP15 will basically upgrade your
core system to OS/2 Warp v4.5, leaving TCP/IP, and the devices to
be upgraded.

Goto http://www.os2site dot com/ and click on the upgrade icon, this will
take you to my upgrade page with links to IBM and other places.

I would also upgrade your TCP/IP to v4.02w, lots of fixes since
OS/2 v4.0 was released.

Its time consuming but well worth it, as a lot of hardware and other
changes have occured in the last 6 years.

Cheers
