Hi Ian,
Well I tried the tips at your web site to no avail. When I added the adapter ID for the 1st
NIC then inserted the second NIC, the system hung just after the network card driver
loaded :( It also detected the media incorrectly before it hung too.

One other problem I'm having is with DHCP - after the machine boots, ifconfig -lan0
shows an apparent IP address, but I have no DNS until I go to DHCP and do a
Release Renew - which is obviously quite annoying! Any tips on this?

Er, Ed & Daryl & others who use setboot, it says *shutdown* buffers and caches. It does not say *Flushes* buffers and caches to
disk before shutdown...

Thus it doesn't actually say that it will save the data. Could be dangerous, dude...<g>

I would also set the Device and Bus numbers using MPTN, as well
as all other settings, then add the Adapter ID's to protocol.ini.

It may also be that these two similar cards will never work together
in the same PC. It would be easier and safer for future to buy
another NIC, only make sure its a different brand, and chipset.

I tend to use the IBM Etherjet cards, as well as the Intel cards
now.

I also remember there is one SMC card that a lot of people have
had problems with in relation to either the card itself, or the
drivers.

I use Unix ports, as I could never get the OS/2 WSeB versions to
work, also, all my network is fixed IP as most are servers.

Hi all

Anyone got there Convience Pack yet ?
I'm going to start asking IBM in the morning, though
I'm not sure who to ask, I'm sure I'll figure it out...

People overseas seem to get 6 monthly CDROM's
so I'm wondering if there are several levels of
Software Choice, or does this only occur if you
get the full Software Support Package from IBM ?

This is an unofficial release of the driver for the Creative SoundBlaster Live audio card which solves a conflict with USB adapters that claim
exclusive access for an IRQ that is required by the soundcard by simply not loading the driver.

There is a new audio interface included, that is used by the recent ODIN builds.

Is your LAN0 pointing to the Telstra cable ?
If so, DHCP client on OS/2 should pick up
all the info, but it doesn't harm to manually
configure the Telstra DNSes and domain at:

domain nsw.bigpond dot net dot au
nameserver 61.9.192.13
nameserver 61.9.192.16
nameserver 24.192.1.30

Hi Paul,
I'd be interested in how you go with a Realtek 8029 chipset NIC.
I've found the performance of these cards is woeful, but the card may
not be the limiting factor in your gateway application.

What hardware are you putting InJoy firewall on?
I'm about to change my gateway to a lesser box, Celeron
433MHz->486DX2-66, so it will be interesting to see if there is a
performance difference.

Daryl,
Well at this stage I'm tending to agree with you about the Realtek 8029 chipset NIC.
Performance of the cable internet when routed through this card is terrible. IRC DCC
lucky to hit 5k/s, web pages slow, ftp's don't work. Maybe I'll try the D-Link driver for the
card instead of the generic Realtek driver and see how I go.

This machine (the one Injoy Firewall is going on) is a Cyrix 6x86-P200+ with 128mb
RAM that is also sometimes used as a workstation. The text based firewall didn't
seem to have a major performance hit.

Regards,

Paul.

Realtek 8029 is more than fast enough for a standard gateway,
not the best or fastest 10Mb card around but more than adaquate
for a gateway.

Remember to run InJoy Firewall in text mode, beats the
hell out of using that GUI, which is the main CPU sucker.
The GUI still ran fine for me though, just less RC5DES
blocks got crunched.

If you need a hand with Filters and Rules, let us all know :-)

As per my previous post - I too found the OS/2 performance of the 8029 pretty ordinary.
For the time being I've swapped the purposes of the two cards over. ie using the SMC
10/100 card with the Cable modem (Yes a waste - I know) and the 8029 on the LAN and
we'll see how that goes. I'll do some benchmarking tomorrow and see if the 8029
handles that any better. In the meantime, I'll try and seek out a 10/100 NIC with a
non-Realtek 8139 chipset - anyone have a spare they want to swap for an Accton
Realtek based card??? :)

Regards,

Paul.
