I have, but that's internal of course. If you check the website
address I gave the group, you'll see it says existing subscibers
are being sent the Convienience pack. I suspect this is a BIG job
and will take some time, but if you think you've missed out, contact

Subject: [os2genau] SIG Report for March Meeting

OS/2 SIG Meeting Report for March 2001
by John Angelico 9544 8792 (with copy to the SIG members)

We began our March meeting with a shortage of people as compared to
previous months, and we were not the only SIG to experience this
phenomenon. Was it the ending of Daylight Saving? The sudden change
in the weather? Nuclear Tests? The absence of Nuclear Tests? The fall
in the Australian dollar? We may never know...

In total about a dozen faithful OS/2ers could be present and we
occupied ourselves usefully in compiling a list of current OS/2 links
in the form of a page for the SIG Web Site.

By the end of the evening we had built a substantial page of
confirmed links, with more to be added. We also had an additional set
of links to be investigated, and suggestions for more pages
(developers, multimedia etc) to come. We had some interesting
discussion about whether to sub-divide the entries into categories,
and eventually decided to build a table with free-form notes to aid
searchers.

The end result will be put into the SIG web site shortly, as the base
page for more links in the future.

We also outlined plans for next month's meeting which we expect will
be on Lotus Notes. We have an enthusiastic evangelist for Notes in
the SIG and we are presently working on a presentation for April.

Ever wondered what the Lotus Notes Client CD in the Warp 4 box was
for? Well, come along to the next meeting and find out. You may
discover that it's the best thing since OS/2 (which is the best thing
since sliced bread in the computer world, right?), and the most
powerful database known to intelligent man.

So, make a note to be at the meeting on April 24th!

Subject: [os2genau] Launchpad & Powerpoint Questions

Hi everybody!

I have two questions to throw into the ring

1. Powerpoint Viewer
I believe there is a Win 3.1 aka Win-OS2 free viewer available from
the Dark Side (similar to the MS-Word Viewer) for viewing those
horribly large Powerpoint presentation files. Does anyone know where
to find it (apart from Hobbes where I will search next time I
connect).

I have been sent a PPE file and Lotus Freelance Graphics won't open
it.

2. Launchpad
As a result of some funny business on my Drive D: which I have now
resolved (I think), I have a Launchpad with those Green & White
Question Mark symbols for buttons which can't find an object. NB:
This is not the standard "Broken Link" symbol and I can't delete the
rotten things.

Does anyone recall this problem from Warp 3 days, and does anyone
have a solution?

Its called Star Office ;-)
Seriously though I've heard there is a simple view to but havent
been able to find it, I only tried for about 60 seconds though
before remembering that StarOffice can view them ok.

I've done a number of checkini runs to clear the basic problem which
caused this.
However, this is not the simple missing links stuff any more.

And I am careful about putting new stuff onto the Launchpad now. I'm
glad it's mostly a stable environment here.

Good choices, especially the intel, I prefer a smart NIC myself and
I've had no problems with the intel NIC's, definetly faster than
the realtek based cards, and excellent for 486 gateways as they
tend todo the grunt work on the card itself, not expect the
PC CPU to do some of the work.

Hi graham, Hi all,

I have downloaded but not yet installed the IBM Browser/2 however I
believe
it to be the GA (Nerd term for release version) of the OS/2 Port of
Mozilla, which
IBM has been heavily helping with the development of over the last year.
It is the
equivalent of Netscape 6 for Windows. I have the Warpzilla version in
and working
and it doesn't surprise me that a release version has now come out as
the code's
ben prety stable for a while now.

The IBM "variant" is packaged with a Macromedia Flash plugin and I
"believe" it
can support most if not all plug-ins that work with NS 4.61 (but don't
shoot me
if I get this one wrong).

It is designed to run with JAVA 2 (in IBM terms Java V 1.3 - why? dont
ask me) and I believe it may have problems with Java 1.1.8. That said I
use the Warpzilla
version with Java 118 so I guess it's going to be a try it and see.

JAVA 2 is the way forward but I get the feeling that we should perhaps
only try
it out on non-essential systems for the time being. There is a problem
with LVM
(The FDISK replacement fot JFS) it's a Java app and wont run with Java
2. There's
also supposed to be some Java Plugin ? still to come for the new
browser. I don't
know if this means that java applets won't work at the moment? Again the
Warpzilla
port doesn't seem to have any problems.

I think I may install this new browser on my Warp Convienience pack
test
partition as it's running Java 2 already. I'll report back my findings.
I wonder
if anyone can produce a uniquely Australian "skin"for the new browser ?

Cheers,

Ed.

According to local rumours here a Russion team is working now on Staroffice/2 version 6.0 .

Version 6.00 won't have that superimposed desktop anymore, but separate *.exe for each of
the components, just as the other "normal" suites.

Howdy John,

I would have to agree with Craig. Drag the objects off and shred them. It doesn't take much time to replace,
possible even less time than trying to find and fix broken objects.

Gee....I haven't used Warp3 in years. I might load it back on sometime.

P.S. I've had this happen to the Warp centre once as well, but that was my fault.

Hi all,
I saw a post considering options for non-commercial users of os/2.
I've been with os/2 since 2.1, consider it the best desktop available but unsure if I will take the SWC avenue.
I run 3 os/2 pc's in engineering with various mixed apps which I wouldn't consider risking win on.
I can run it till it dies, and that may be a few yrs yet,
I'm running linux servers, the desctop is inproving, its cheap and robust, and porting from my os/2 and dos apps isn't too bad.
I have considered apples osx at us$ 129.

The kids will probably never use os/2, linux is a little beyond them yet but they could use osx and I'd rather buy them macs
than winboxes for school.

The doom and gloom's a bit depressing, the userbase and mainstream applications seem to be slipping but the community
is strong.

Cheer me with some rumours for advancement with SWC and ecomstation.
