Subject: [os2genau] OS/2 SIG Report Feb 2001 PLUS!

Hello all!

Below you will find the full report of the Feb meeting (some attachments won't find their way into the PC Update
version) and I am pleased to announce that subsequent to the meeting we have been able to negotiate with our South
Aussie colleagues to transfer the os2genau mailing list off the yahoo-egroups "free-adverts-get-in-the-flaming-way"
list and onto
1) an OS/2 server (3 cheers!)
2) run by an OS/2 enthusiast who is also running a commercial ISP operation (3 cheers!)
3) using a proper os2 domain name (3 cheers!)

I have posted this message to the new list os2genauatos2 dot org dot au as a parallel test run to ensure that we have
transferred all the addresses correctly.

So I hope that within 24 hours, you should all receive TWO reports - one to each list address.

If you only receive one, please tell me pronto which list you did receive, and we will analyse the error and fix it
as necessary.

Once that is completed, we will a) transfer archive messages if possible, b) issue a faq on use of the new list and
then c) close off egroups.

This represents stage one of three or four:
1) hosting our mail on a server within the OS/2 community.
2) Stage two will be to rebuild web pages for Australian OS/2 (and eCS) groups using the os2 dot org dot au domain;
3) Stage three we hope will be establishing FTP file areas and
4) a possible stage four will be to link with os2world dot com

Then we'll think about giving melbpc dot org dot au a link to the site...<he, he, he!>

Subject: [os2genau] Uploading files

Hi All,

After 4 years with my ISP, I have finally decided to make use of the 5Mb
on their server that is allocated to me. I have checked the site and a
page exists. I prepared a short file to test it, as per instructions
called "index.html".

The issue is that I cannot connect to the site using FTP-PM. As per
instuctions I am using the following in the "Open Remote Host" box:

Host=www.adelaide dot net dot au
User=dial-in username
Password=dial-in password

Attached is the ftp error window that appears, at least I hope it
attaches.

The following are the instructions from my ISP (win-centric, of course):

How do I put my own Web pages on the Internet?
Camtech also offer two other services on www.adelaide dot net dot au, mailto
forms and counters.
Camtech recommend following the instructions below when trying to FTP
your page to your Webspace:
Download WS_FTP (for Windows) or Fetch (for Mac). These programs allow
you to upload your Web pages. Both are freely available from our
toolspage, although they are both also on the Internet Starter Kit (if
you received it on CD-ROM).
When you FTP to your Web directory on www.adelaide dot net dot au your home
directory is where you need to put the default file named index.html
which is the Web page presented when you visit
http://www.adelaide dot net dot au/~USERNAME
Note: USERNAME is your dialup account username
FTP Directory Structure: www.adelaide dot net dot au/~USERNAME/index.html
WS_FTP
To install WSFTP (for Windows 3.x, WindowsNT and Windows95), complete
the
following:
* From the Camtech tools page click on the WS_FTP icon.
* Click on the WS_FTP Limited Edition 4.6 link in the Ipswitch
Evaluation Downloads page.
* Fill in the Information page and click on the Finished icon.
* Select a site and a version (Win95/NT or Win3x) to begin the
download.
* Once the file is on your computer (ws_ftple.exe for Win95/NT, or
ws_ftp16.exe for Win3x), double-click it.
* Select "Install WS_FTP LE" and click the "Continue" button.
* Select the appropriate descriptions and click "Next".
* Enter the destination directory and click "OK".
* Enter the preferred local destination directory and click "OK".
Once installed, double-click the WSFTP icon and input the following on
the connect screen:
        Profile Name = WWW
Host Name/Address = www.adelaide dot net dot au
        Host Type = Automatic Detect
User ID = Your dial-in username
        Password = Your dial-in password
The program screen will show your hard-drive on the left-hand pane, and
your web space on the right-hand pane. All you will have to do is select
your new index.html on your hard-drive, click the To Web Arrow, and it
will replace the existing index.html.

Any ideas?

Some other settings to try.

Host = 203.108.8.66
Account = normal
User = lbuntingatcamtech dot net dot au

The above host shouldnt work but I have seen one
ISP who didnt know how to setup there own FTP server.

The above username is required with some ISP's depending
on if they are reselling from someone like connect dot com dot au

Leigh,

To start with, why not use the Built in publish function of Netscape Composer
??

Open the page from you harddisk in Composer - make sure it looks OK,

Go to file / publish and an entry screen will be displayed.

Change the title box to contain the title you want to appear on the top of the
page
when someone opens your webpage.

HTML filename should already be filled in and as you said, the standard for
the first
page is index.html (although index.htm, Default.htm and Default.html will
often also
work).

In the location to publish to you should enter ftp://adelaide dot net dot au (note NO
end slash)

Your username and password in the appropriate fields and make sure that "files

associated with this page" radio button is on, so that graphics are
transferred and
press the OK button.

This is how I put my first page up last night ! - Checkout:

Yeah - but trouble is it DID!! Eyhah!!

Thanks Ian, but Ed's suggestion didn't work - it kept trying to send
ftp://index.html.

Next issue - my test page had a couple of links in it (natch) but it put
them up as www.adelaide dot net dot au/www.

How do you get rid of the front bit so that the link works?

Thanks for all your help, guys and Ed sure knows how to "kick ass" ;-)

Leigh,

The simplest way to get rid of additions that you dont want is to open
the HTML file with an editor such as E and simply go through the source
and delete the offending text. A web page is after all only a textual script

when all is said and done - there's no magic!

How did you create the page ? Perhaps with a product customised to work
with adelaide dot net ??

If you opened your page with Netscape composer, when you pressed
file/publish
it's correct that the ftp command would only say ftp://index.html (presuming

that's what your file is called). I think this would have worked correctly.

Cheers

Ed.

Hi Michael,

Well for accessing Optus at home, you'll need to know what authentication method
they use. In the case of Telstra Big Pond, its a proprietry solution however since there
is a linux/Java authentication client available, this is what I use.

The FX communications (aka Injoy) site suggests that some cable internet connections
now run PPP over Ethernet (as do all ADSL solutions). If this is the case then the injoy
products are probably your best bet.

If you want to share the one connection over several PCs on a LAN, then you'll need
the Firewall product that comes with NAT and can have PPPoE and firewall plug-ins
added. Check out Bjarne's site http://www.fx.dk to see what your options are. What
is very good is that you can download and test the various components and then once
everything is working those components you need. There is one ceveat however and
that is that the PPPoE plugin is not available to be installed in the demo version of
the firewall but you can test using the demo version of the full PPPoE client (as
opposed to the plugin) and since it uses common code you can be sure if the
connection works with the PPPoE client it'll also work with the firewall/gateway
with the plug-in.

If you only need to connect one PC, you don't need the firewall/gateway, although
it adds security, you can simply go with the PPPoE client.

This all assumes that Optus at Home uses PPPoE - Perhaps someone else on the
listserve can confirm or deny this ?? If you have the Windoze software at present
this my also tell you.

Good luck

Ed.

jpegtran translates JPEG files from one variant of JPEG to another, for

lossless: no image degradation occurs, which would not be true if you
used djpeg followed by cjpeg . However, you cannot alter the image

I do html stuff at work on the Intranet, so I'm fairly familiar with it. We have
to use M$ Frontpage but I usually have to go back and re-edit all the crud out
of it directly in the html window, but it seems a little different doing it
outside in the real world or maybe Frontpage and the server handle things a bit
differently.

Through NS Composer. I have solved the link issue as I didn't put the http:// in
the front of the URL. Doh! So they work fine now.

I worked out that the publishing address actually had to be
http://www.adelaide dot net dot au/~lbunting and that the user name wanted my email
address. Came back with the message this time that says: "Error uploading
files The server responded: Your browser sent a message this server
could not understand." Getting closer than before ;(

Now, when Greg gets around to sending out the template file, I'll get cracking
on the Secretary Page for our web site.

Yes, its MajorMajor, a lot of Aussie software, or at least Aussie
compiled software.

=========================================
New server for os2 dot org dot au (use donated by me) is as follows

PIII-450
128Mb RAM
4.7Gb IDE Harddisk
1.9Gb free on server partition
OS/2 Warp v4.5 (FP15) / TCP/IP v4.31
Apache v1.3.19
EMX v0.9d + Pentium extensions
Peter Moylans FTPServer v0.9
Peter Moylans Weasel Mail Server v1.2
Peter Moylans MajorMajor v1.2
Ians Beta WebList software.
All servers are backed up daily.

ftp = ftp. (no anonymous allowed)
www  =  www.
mail   =  mail.

Bit of overkill for one main Usergroup page, and
one mailing list :-)

Hi Ed,

It was just easier to list the software separately.

Hi Gavin,

Gavin, you will need the following fixes:
MPTS WR08610
TCP/IP 4.0 Applications fix UN_0980
(IBM)
MPTS WR08621
(IBM)
Fix 17524.exe
(http://www.warpupdates.de)

Installed in the above order.

Base operating fixes, known to work:
FixPak 12
FixPak 14, (with kernel updates).

Don't gasp, but the above is known to work, I'm happy to help you get
the above configuration working, as I have extensive experience with it.
I simply don't have the time to try & get earlier versions of the code
working properly, sorry.

You will need the InJoy PPPoE Client.
Where do you live?
What carrier were you considering using?

Hi Michael,
Optusathome merely use DHCP.
You do not need PPPoE.
You do not need anything else.
Ed is correct regarding sharing the one connection.
You will need InJoy Firewall.

G'day all
Hope you are all having a happy day or night where ever you may be.

I'm am intending to do a new installion of Warp this weekend (with
luck) after installing my new 20gb Quantum Fireball and I have a couple of
questions I hope you can help me with.

1: Is it advisable to put the system archives and the swap file on the
same partition? 2: Does making the the intial swap file large eg 128mb
make that much of a difference? 3: After applying FP15 what other files
need to be applied to the system? 4: What fixes need to be applied to
TCP/IP 4.1?
5: When creating partitions am I limited to 21 + A&B + CDrom + Zip drive +
CD burner (if I can get to work)? 6: What is the file that allows OS/2
to read multi-session CDRW? 7: I know there's a 7 but buggered if I can
think what it is :-)

All this won't be happen for about 24 hrs as I need sleep and have to
work Saturday nights. All your help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I know Daryl has answered the code version questions. I'll only comment on
the swap file - general rule of thumb, put it in the root directory of the least
used partition on the most used drive. In an ideal world put it in a partition
of it's own. Make the initial size 10 times the amount of physical memory you
have in your PC (remember the second parameter on the line is the initial size,
the first is the increment should it run out). Like I say in an ideal world where
you have enough space, oh yes make the swap partition at least twice as large
as this initial value. so say 64MB memory - initial size 640MB on a separate
1280MB partition.

For most systems this is overkill but if you have the space ....

oh yes any release after about FP3 can read multisession CDs.

Cheers

Ed.

David,

Please Do NOT send attached files to the listserver.
Quite a lot of people have slow Internet dialup conections and
the attached file will very severely affect their bandwith and
increase their on line time.

The correct proceedure would have been to quote the URL where the
file was obtained from, and/or to have sent the attachement PRIVATELY
to John Angelico direct.

There are two new OS/2 device drivers now available on the OS/2 DDPak

some of you. They're currently beta, but will become "IBM Supported"

Not sure what John Angelico has planned there but normally I
would leave the other list there for a month to catch the unweary,
and/or, put a notice on that list re the new list.

I see no reason to stay subscribed to yahoo groups though.

> Is the ftp going to be for general access or just for software created

FTP is basically for the owners of the os2 dot org dot au website and anyone
that is allowed access to the few pages.

I can setup a general FTP access area (away from the os2 dot org dot au web)
for list members with a username and password, as due to the amount
and type of abuse that was happening on os2site, I'm loath to
provide an anonymous service. Even now I'm getting people in
France trying to delete whole directories on os2site, and searching
for ways to break in via FTP. I just hope that Peter Moylans
delete file bug never resurfaces..

I can setup a u/p protected directory for writing and reading
files but with no delete or rename privilege.

I might even be able to link access to the web based
sub/unsub, so the username used for access will be your
email address to the left of the at, and a general easy
to use password, something for the future.

>Thanks for all the good work. It is most appreciated.

OS/2 has done a lot for me over the years, and I
suspect if I had been using Windows, I wouldnt have
the time to learn all that I have, I'd be to busy fighting
fires :-)

Hi David

hmm, just noticed that that was a big file !!

Feel free to send me files like that but only OFF LIST,
and I can put it in a web accessible directory at

http://www.os2site dot com/software/incoming/

You can also upload files to this directory
via the "upload" button on the front page of

I'd better look at putting an attatchment stripper filter
into the list software.

Generally I would stick to Ed's rule with this, though I dont use
a swap file at all on my own computer, I have the RAM to cope.

2: Does making the the intial swap file large eg 128mb
>make that much of a difference?

Yes, saves the swap file from resizing/expansion blues
(preformance)

3: After applying FP15 what other files need to be applied to the system?

Generally:-

http://www.os2site dot com/software/upgrades/upgrades.html

Device Driver Pack #2

> 4: What fixes need to be applied to TCP/IP 4.1?

ftp://service.boulder.ibm dot com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.1os2/

>5: When creating partitions am I limited to 21 + A&B + CDrom + Zip drive +
>CD burner (if I can get to work)?

Gee, I wouldnt advise 21 :-)

I normally make a 2Gb boot partition, for OS/2 and my
general Applications (size depends on the Harddisk)

For the swap file (if you only have one HD) I would
create a 1Gb partition for your swap file (in the middle
of disk access) then create one large partition for your
general data.

It really depends, I use Perl and do some Unix/linux
porting, so I have seperate scsi drives for E: & F:

You might want, or need, a Win partition, maybe a Linux
partition.

> 6: What is the file that allows OS/2 to read multi-session CDRW?

Device Driver Pak #2 will take care of that for you.

Isnt that always the way.

You have the older Java1.1.8, so thats fine, not that I think
your using java for these sites.

Folks

I see the email server has changed.
I am immediately missing the daily digest feature of yahoogroups.
Its all very well changing for the sake of proving OS/2 can do it,
but when you loose useful features, or reinvent the wheel you'd have to ask
why.

And since I an now receiving all messages indivually can I as a favour to
those of you who reply to messages in this group.
DONT quote the message you are replying to verbatim.
Just quote the bits you are replying to.
Yahoogroups had the useful feature of being able to view the archive, and
obtaining the context there if necessary, rather than overloading a message
with quotes of quotes.

thanks

Yes, for a few different reasons, not just because its
hosted on OS/2.

This feature is a few weeks away, then those people that were on
digests will be back on that mode.

Yes, this is common curtesy for all lists, as is turning off html.

I'm messing with a filter to remove attatchments as well, and
Peter Moylan will be adding a remove attatchement feature
to MajorMajor Mailing List some time in the near future.

Unfortuneately, this is a chronic problem to most, dare I say, all e-mail lists. It
drives me nuts when people respond to long e-mails with only a few words, but have the
quotes and requotes of requotes in full detail.

Yes, Ian got that right. As soon as you see posts coming through the

Definitely future. We are trying not to overload ourselves with too
much happening at once. As soon as the list settles down to regularly

For information of the list, David H sent me an attachment with ZIP

This distribution contains the sixth public release of the

Serious users of this software (particularly those incorporating it

II think it is mainly of interest to developers of jpg reading or
writing software (like PMView).

So thanks David, but it will be of limited value now. It was probably
very important when released. We now see the fruit in products like
say Netscape and PMView.

Hi Simon.

Ian will have to reply re (and he may also apologise for) the absence
of digest mode.

I will apologise as moderator because I didn't think of it (Duh!
Slaps forehead with hand and smashes face into keyboard ... qweh
owehfegvnold'fa ksjg) <G>

I can at least reply to the other bits.

We didn't change to prove that OS/2 can do it, or to merely re-invent
the wheel.

The reasons were thus:
a) advertising was getting on our nerves, and there was the potential
to advertise things we would disagree with (like the latest MS Back
Office Pack deal or something equally preposterous)
b) when yahoo took over egroups, their proposed copyright policy was
excessively restrictive
c) maintenance via the web interface involved too many screens, and a
lot of fiddling around for me and
d) with more web mail sites being attacked, we also faced the risks
of more spamming (or worse) although we are thankful that our time
with egroups didn't seem to generate any floods of spam - so their
anti-spam techniques must have done a pretty good job.

Hi everyone

We have the list page up and running at

http://www.os2site.com/list/

We also have Digest mode up and running (well, its worked
ok in the tests),

I will swap those people who were previously on digest mode
over tomorrow (Wed) night, unless they have already unsubscribed
from os2genau, and already subscribed to os2genau_digest.

Testra have continueing Cable & ADSL problems, so
those using cable and ADSL, (Hi Ed, I've got error messages
trying to post to you to), the problems not me ;-)

I am also testing the filter for stripping attatchments and
HTML from emails, give me until Friday next week, as I'm
also working on the BIND v9.1 port to OS/2.

And yes, I'm lucky and privileged that there is a company
named after my initials ;->

It's always good to stay with a major chipset such as those

say I've ever installed a PCI (as opposed to ISA) sound card,
nowadays I tend to run the onboard sound chips.

From: "Robert Traynor (BobT)" <rtraynoratoptushome dot com dot au>
Subject: [os2genau] WinNT server does have a genuine use.. Yea Mickey.

Hi ALL,

I recently discovered a use for my firms' Windows NT 4.0 server.
It is an ideal habitat for field mice.!

As the nights are getting cooler, the poor mice are seeking warmth and comfort.

When they entered our warehouse (business name withheld to protect yours truly),
they discovered a server machine running (mostly) 24 hrs/day 7 days/week in a
VERY warm cupboard. I should add here that this exquisite piece of office
furniture was designed by the Boss, after discarding 90% of my design suggestions.!

I had left the cover off the computer box in a quick and dirty attempt, over our
recent summer period, to rectify an overheat problem that had occurred within
the "bowels" of the cupboard.

I received a round of applause from said boss, at the time, particularly as my "fix"
did not cost him anything.

Now back to our hero.
The poor "Mickey" entered the cover-less tower case and discovered a 2nd printer card
had been plugged into the bottom motherboard ISA slot and that it was an easily
accessible platform to jump onto. This was a lot better than being outside in the cold.!

Unfortunately, mice are not very well house trained, and Mickey also mistook this same
printer card for a toilet (Sans toilet seat, of course.) :)

Later, we discovered that any print job sent to that particular
attached printer, resulted in heaps of paper printed with garbage.
It looked strangley like the patterns you occassionaly see printed on toilet paper.

It literally gave us the shits trying to figure out what had gone wrong. :)

I then received a round of criticism from said boss at this time, particularly as my
previous "fix" has NOW has cost HIM $27.50 for a new printer card.

Sigh. Sometimes you just can't win.

The moral of the story is any one, or all, of the following:-

Never let a Boss design anything, particularly if he is required to pay for it.

Windows NT has at least ONE environmental function - as a toilet for mice.

Some systems ARE made to piss on.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Yesterdays acclaim is todays condemnation.

Windows NT can accomodate more than one mouse at a time. Is this, I wonder, SMP?
Symmetric Mouse Processing.?

Should we run a competition to see who can come up with the best idea here?
I am open to suggestions.
I hope this little bit of humor brightens up your day as much as it did mine.

BobT.
