Hi Ian,

I also did this and I would suggest that when you have
everything up to your satisfaction - DEFRAG it - I use Chris
Graham's Utils. You'll probably find that some of the e.g.
log files are up to 800-1000 separate extents! Do the defrag
before you do the backup/format/restore. You may find it's
not then necessary to do the backup [just to completely
defragment] - the 12MB font files etc are almost always 2
extents because of the 8MB directory bands I suppose.

Hi Robert,

Included with the Graham Utilities is a program
Part-Fix.exe, which can recover your partition tables (MBR +
EPBR entries in extended partition) and which works
backwards from the end of the disk. If you don't have them
already, seems that now would be the second-best time to get
them. Of course at installation they create a copy of all
the partition info on floppy - you can't bypass that step &
it can be repeated at any time you re-partition your drives.
Setup the screwed-up disk as slave or secondary master to
the W98 disk & you can modify manually with e.g. Norton
Diskedit (DOS). Once you get the hang of the chaining of the
blocks it's pretty simple with a direct-disk hex editor.
Just do a search on 0x55AA as the last word of a sector to
find likely boot records. If you remember the approximate
sizes of the partitions you can narrow down the likely
starting cylinders for each, etc., using simple ratios.

Hello

I thought that 'defragging' discs and files was not needed for HPFS - at least not as
often as FAT etc, but please educate me...

what does defragging do that an occasional cleaning up of the ini files and check
disk doesnt do and when and how would I be aware that my system needed to be
defragged ( sounds lurid!!!) and is this something that is only available via the
Graham Utilities?

I am aware now of the useful ability to archive additional files every time that we do
a desktop backup using the addition of

set keyfile=*.*

in the os2 archive directory

can I begin a discussion /thread on which files other users of OS2 (client and
server) commonly add to this directory and perhaps if not obvious, an explanation
of why?

thanks

defragging *definteley* needs to be done at *regular* basis, even for HPFS

I do mine regularly, every 3 years.

I forgot the stats from last time, it was something redicoulsly low, in %
terms

YMMV

defragging is to do with disk /cluster space allocation, GU or Gammatech
will tell you if need defragging

ini files simply gets rid of crud in the two ini files

Does anyone know how to setup ssh on OS/2?
I got the download from hobbes, but the documentation is very hard to

After 7 attempts to install eCS I've finaly given up and returned to
#12. My mouse now flies across the screen, files load in next to
nothing( at least an order of magnitude faster) and scrolling past the
end of the page once again is dangeriously difficult.
Lotus 123 now works and doesn't send the system into convulsions when
you try to save or exit.
Until someone can successfully explain to me why an upgrade degrades the
system and makes applications which work in fp12 become useless, then
eCS will stay Shelfware.

I gave it two weeks of pain, and the only things that worked correctly
were Internet Adventurer, Netscape and Majong.

Now it's back to work and see you at the next SIG

Dennis.

Subject: Re: [os2genau] eCS Install (was ... I'm back

With regard to an unsuccessful update - it may be caused by something
fundamentally wrong in the base system, that is creating problems during the
upgrade. Have you tried a clean install to a new partition ?

I took the simplistic approach of doing a "clean" eCS installation - it all
WAD (Worked As Designed) - nary a problem, and the Smart Suite is all up and
running plus a few other applications like Describe plus many REXX programs, and
other utilities ex Hobbes etc etc that I've built up over the years.

There used be a good "SAVEFLDR" utility around that's handy for saving desktop
structures - I suggest a hunt on Hobbes to see if it's around. On this occasion
I didn't bother - just drag/dropped stuff off the data disk to a CDROM where RSJ
saved a safety copy "as is", and I just built a new eCS partition and away it
all went. 45 minutes or so to a running system, and one evening to have all my
applications back in order and current code running it all. Nice !
