Well, looking for a hole more than hacking ;-)

Yes, I physically delete the files in several directories, I will send you
a list privately, your expert will know which ones need to be kept.

>the UPS is a SOLA UPS 1050 520RM unit..

Cant help you with this one, I have OS/2 software for Tripplite and APC.
You could try the software at http://www.os2site dot com/sw/util/power/ or
is it asking to much that SOLA might have some OS/2 software ?

I know that the CBA had some SOLA UPS's, the servers then were
OS/2 so SOLA might have drivers on there website, or archives.

Note that "then" translates as a few years ago :-)

Subject: Re: [os2genau] PPPoE default route uses Peer-IP

Hi Ian,
Having one machine with a smaller MTU is critical, even on TCP/IP v4.21.

Note "netstat -n" does *not* show if the MTU has been automatically
dropped to a smaller value than it was set with using setup.cmd!

So its a bit like finding black holes, you can't actually see them, only
the effects!

MTU mismatch will probably cause data packets to be incomplete, causing
multiple retries & eventually if that is unsuccessful, time-outs & error
messages.

I've now got intranet hosts working *extremely* well, but the gateway
running IJF & PPPoE is a dead loss with wget, irrespective of whether I
run it in PASSIVE or ACTIVE mode.
I'm sure it is some obscure local MTU configuration issue since the
PPPoE plug-in is local to wget.

What is very interesting is knowing the symptoms of MTU mismatch.
Most critical is www surfing, ping, tracerte & nslookup are all unlikely
to fail due to MTU mismatch.

WWW SYMPTOMS:
1)
Broken pipe messages
2)
Some images don't load.
3)
Java applets fail.
4)
Sites only work at off-peak times, but seem fail during peak times.
5)
Reloading incomplete pages works.

OTHER SYMPTOMS:
6)
Unable to receive email.
7)
Unable to send emails with large attachments. Short text emails are OK.

Here are my test results which indicate tuning is very much ISP
specific, as theoretically, MTU=1492 should be all I need to accommodate
PPPoE.

SERVER2 INTRANET HOST URL

1492 1492 1500 1500 x x x y
1492 1492 1492 1492 y y * y

I have seen the APC drivers used with non-APC UPSes, so that's probably the ones
you should try first. Presuming you have the APC drivers. (APC=American Power
Conversion).

Hi Graham.

re the UPS monitoring question:

I have a product called LanSafe III for Novell, Microsoft & OS/2,
which claims to manage shutdowns and monitor power and
the UPS itself
( I think LanSafe III is for the network,
FailSafe III is for standalones )

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with it yet
because I don't have a UPS.

( my main computer used to be a laptop,
and I used its battery as a UPS ).

The manual does seem to mention a whole heap
of shutdown options, with instructions for 'installing'
UPS models which aren't included in the install list.

If you like, I can have another look after we finish
shifting house.

Regards
Chris.
