Bob,

Lifting the above quote from the discussion thread between yourself and
Kris Steenhaut on lost desktops, may I pose a question on a related
topic?

I recently lost my Warpcentre settings on a power failure, and after
trying to find a way of recovering (I use Unimaint regularly) I finally
resorted to the tedious task of rebuilding all of my trays!

Can you or someone else advise on the best (or any??) way of restoring
the Warpcentre? Where does all of that data live?

Peter

Backup!

Just backup the dock* files in the \os2\dll directory.

These are the files you need to backup:
c:\os2\dll\scenter.cfg
c:\os2\dll\dock*.cfg

(My OS2 drive is c: of course)

If you can get it, I highly recommend OptusatHome cable
(http://www.optushome dot com dot au/) which is available in areas on Sydney,
Melbourne and Brisbane. It's faster (I get ~3Mbit/sec download, 128Kbit/sec
upload) and cheaper than ADSL, and from broadband news reports
(http://whirlpool dot net dot au/), seems more reliable as well.

And best of all, it works *great* with OS/2! No silly dialer programs; your
IP address is DHCP assigned (though is static!) so you just boot up your
machine and off you go. That is, if you bother rebooting at all ... :-)

At a guess :

Try moving " using std::cout;" outside the main() function

Also I was under the impression that in C++ the double slash // at the
begining of a line indicated a comment and so is ignored by the
compiler.

So
int main()
{
   using std::cout;

return 0;

is what you are compiling.

I'm not convinced that you need the int before main()

but like I said, I'm not a C or C++ programmer, and every time I see any
C or C++ source code reinforces my determination to have nothing to do
with either of them.

Dennis.

Subject: Re: [os2genau] TCPIP configuration

Ed,
Someone once wrote that we should keep a notebook alongside
the OS/2 box to record all changes etc. :-) . My advancing dementia
would benefit if I was this thorough ! I have been wading through
all the bits of paper ( printouts) I have used to get me this far.... and
into this problem.
Firstly, I used two how-to's to setup the lan.
a) Frank Field's 1998 piece " Setting up OS/2 Peer-to-Peer Networking
& Coexistence of Warp & NT Machines on the MITNet."
    See: http://www.phillyos2 dot org/networking.htm
b) Judy McDermott's "Lan Setup" at http://www.gt-online dot com/~bri

When I inspect my settings I note they are completely in keeping
with Field's . There is no TCP/IP Configuration (Lan) icon and all that
Remote Configuration stuff is as he shows it.
But I am using TCP/iP 4.3 with some updates which I applied
when I had a problem and a mailing in the eCS user group said to
do so. It fixed that problem. Ver 4.3 has a Java front end as you would
know. When I run tcpcfg2.cmd to produce the eCS TCPIP notebook
I get:
[C:\]tcpcfg2
java.lang.NullPointerException
        at COM.ibm.raleigh.tcp.tcpcfg2 dot common.FileLock.releaseLock
(FileLock.java:160)
        at COM.ibm.raleigh.tcp.tcpcfg2.client.Tcpcfg2.exitApplet
(Tcpcfg2.java:563)
        at COM.ibm.raleigh.tcp.tcpcfg2.client.Tcpcfg2.init
(Tcpcfg2.java:234)
        at COM.ibm.raleigh.tcp.tcpcfg2.client.Tcpcfg2c.main
(Tcpcfg2c.java:137)

And that's about it. I think i'll do as you suggest and re-install.
I realise BTW that I have to use a NAT/ Firewall add-on like
Injoy. Actually I'll use SafeFire. These programs are easier
to set-up than Zampa which is included in the GA of eCS.

Many thanks for your imput. I'm sure I speak for other
try-hards like me when I say I appreciate it.

Bob,
It's strange but I had noted that file, as a pencil note, on one of the
two lan setup how-to's I used. I probably saw it in the newsgroup
survey I did. I t is located in C:\MPTN and has been renamed to
ibmlanlk.lsk so I must have had a look at this troublesome file
sometime or other. Anyway, it does not appear to be the culprit
in preventing the TCPIP notebook from opening.
Thanks for your usual helpful info Bob.

Peter,

As John has already said in his reply:-

These are the files you need to backup:
:\os2\dll\scenter.cfg
:\os2\dll\dock*.cfg

As John would know, I use "Deskbak" to backup the whole os/2
desktop and all crucial files. It is a pity that the author,
Andrew Keil, lost his source code years ago. It is a very
good backup system even with the few known problems it has
and I far prefer it to Unimaint's backup system.

Deskbak is available to all members of MelbPc Os2 SIG group
on a donation basis, courtesy of Andrew Keil, past Co-ordinator.

Daryl will probably answer this one, but IMO ADSL
technology is still "flakey" - not reliable. Probably
OK for Home use (a big improvement over POTS
Dial-UP) but I wouldn't use it for Business - ISDN
gives a reliable 1 to 1 link ADSL is shared at some
point.

Never heard of Connexus as an ISP.

There are very definate restrictions the imfamous
"acceptable use policies" set up by the suppliers
as to what you are allowed to use the link for.
Telstra are the most restrictive.

Look out for delays. Telstra are the primary operator
and as such will "probably" perform installs for their
customers before customers of other companies.

Hi Brad,
Did you say Optus only gives you 128k on the uplink ?

Telstra/Foxtels unlimited bandwidth option is supposed
to be in both directions. The maximum I've achieved is
"only" 2MB/s that only once so far (the speed restrictions
are often "further down the line")
