does anyone know how to stop the warp4 CD player starting
automatically? I uncheck the automatic play option but it
then restarts with a new CD and has the automatic play
button checked again. There must be a better player in any
case? what do people use?

Michael,
I use SysBar/2 and it is free.

I just had a quick look on Hobbes but is not there.
I will send it to you by attachment (not to this group).

As long as the General SCSI and DASD driver files
are there (I expect they would be) yes - just the
adaptec ADD file.

Funny,
I did not know that Warp4 EVER automatically ran Audio CD disks.

The only time it did for me, was when I was using a third party
program:-
Pretty Pop Music and Software- PopCd
http://member.nifty.ne.jp/prettypop/

Also, my previous email I had neglected to set the Hobbes search
to search the ENTIRE archive, the default is to search the directory
that you start in. For me that is always \pub\incoming.

If anyone else wants Sysbar/2 then the most current version is there
on Hobbes after all.

Sorry for confusion.

the saga continues - I've tried a new grabber this time -
JCDread, and this one seems to work - intermittantly! I'm
starting to suspect that my AOpen x50 CD drive is faulty -
too much jitter. Audio tracks that are grabbed often sound
'broken' ie intermittant sound. Sometimes though they are
OK - GRRRRRRR!
When the grabber doesn't grab, it fails with this grab.log

Err: couldn't open a handle for your Drive!

This would follow from difficulties that I often have
logging onto this drive, often it hangs the WPS for minutes
until I eject the CD. These times I am also unable to log
onto it from a command line either. Before I shoot the CD
drive I just want to check that this may not be an OS
problem. I'm only using OS/2 on this machine so I can't
check it in windows.

Now you mention it Michael, When I was extracting Audio Cd
tracks and converting them to Mp3's I did have problems with
one CD Drive that I had. I had read somewhere that not all
drives will "rip" tracks correctly. I ended up with (cheap and
cheerful) Mitsubishi Diamond drives and had no further problems.

Have you tried ripping tracks from DOS - boot the PC from a DOS
boot disk with CD support and then run one of the small DOS
utilities. If that also gives problems then it's the drive for sure.

Cheers/2

Hi Michael,

I'm using the Warp4 CD player. It works fine on my system and the autoplay remains off when I change CD's.
I just checked before writing this. If the CD player is not closed properly ie. power failer or a hot boot situation,
then it will revert to the last set of options including track position or will even lose the last track position and
start from the begining of the CD. Try setting your options then close the player and start her up again to see
if the options are being saved.

Cheers,
Gavin

goto x:\mmos2
type "attrib -r cd*.ini"
and "attrib -r mmp*.ini"

Try saving your settings again,
click on shutdown system (do not ctrl-alt-del !!)

restart your PC, and see if it still does it.

Failing that, send me these files from x:\mmos2

mmpm2.ini
mmpmcd.ini

Hi Michael,

I don't use CDRecord/2 ('cause I don't have a burner), but Ed's comment about ripping MP3's reminded me of
something. The CD drive must be capable of Audio Digital Transfer to pipe through the bus rather than the
audio cable to the soundcard. I know this does effect creating MP3's but I'm not sure about audio track
burning. An old rule for audio tracks was that they had to be burned at 1x to avoid jittering. These days there
seems to be alot of dejittering software that allows for higher speed burning of audio tracks.

Cheers
Gavin

If it is about copying CD to CD:

Not so much jitter but being "to slow". Rsj has an option to correct that while
burning, the CD-record/2 combo hasn't, that's why I finally opted for the expensive
way.
Also be sure there aren't fingerprints and/or oddities like that on the source. Very
important is that.

Hi Mike,
Unfortunately, known problem with many CD-ROM drives:- they simply don't
rip properly.
When I was a LAN administrator, I'd actually only purchase CD-ROM drives
tested to rip properly.

Can people on the ListServ suggest some current models that rip reliably
that Mike could buy?
