Subject: [os2genau] CDRecord/2

Is there anyone successfully using this programme that can
help me with some problems? I can make a 1:1 audio Cd copy
so presumably the 'plumbing' is OK. I have a sony CD-RW 140

 My problems are:
I can't access any of the default CDDB servers - does this
function work? )I have a cable direct connection (no proxy
- sshhhh)
when I grab audio tracks they appear to be grabbed - at
least at command line level, but they don't appear at WPS
level - ie not on the 'create audio Cd' folder. Furthermore
when I try to write, the grabbed file size is reported as 0
bytes.

Ideas?

Michael,

I remember something about CDDB changing its web site or else it was
that they were charging for their service. (or some such).

I cannot lay my hands on the info at the moment, but if I find
it I will post the new sites url.

I have at the moment which works via Netscape and is still live:-
http://www.cddb dot com/

And I have "Freedb dot org - a free approach to cddbp" :-
http://WWW.FREEDB.ORG/index.php

Quote from the Website:-

Why freedb dot org ?

As Escient has changed the terms of licence for accessing CDDB, some
programmers complained that the new licence includes certain terms that
threatens them in a way they cannot accept: If you want to access CDDB,
you are not allowed to access any other CDDB-like database (this one, for
example) and - while accessing the database - the programmer has to
ensure, that a CDDB-logo is displayed (Funny sidenote: One programmer told
me, that his cd-player will be banned if he is refusing to display the
CDDB-logo. His software is a console-based program (it does not produce
any graphical output) for blind people...).

Update (March 2001): Gracenote (which is the new name of CDDB) has now
banned all unlicensed applications from accessing their database. New
licenses for CDDB1 are not available anymore, as they obviously want to
force programmers to switch to CDDB2.

Always being able to choose is one of the advantages of the internet. If
Escient forbids the use of other sources now, you can easily think of things
coming next...

Furthermore, many people submitted the information without charging
anybody and they thought their help would remain free, because the initital
license was GPL (see: www.gnu dot org for more information on GPL).

Everything submitted to this site will be GPL'ed!
End Quote from Website...

Michael, what is the CDDB url from your CDRecord/2.?

Regards,
BobT.

I am a big fan of CDRECORD/2 but I have to admit I only
use it to create Data, not Audio CDs. Which front-end (if any)
are you using with it ? I use Audio-CD creator which as, I said
works *VERY* well for data CDs. There's also a program
CDR-Wiz that's supposed to be very good.

When you say you can't get to any of the CDDB servers, what
does that mean? Are we talking about Web-sites hosting tracks
for Audio CDs ? If so can you get to them using a normal
browser ? Perhaps Optus is blocking these specific sites in fear
of pirated tracks ??

Cheers/2

I also am using Audio CD creator

yes. It is an internet based database of every CD and audio
track information!

If so can you get to them using a normal

It is a 90MB database!!!

I'm wondering....

Hi Ed.
I still like the OS on a logical partition, for flexibility adding in drives etc.
C: is the first partition on the first drive, E: could be anywhere, so I would go for;

C: Data, D: Applications, E: OS.

Then if you were unfortunate enough to be compelled to you could add in another drive for a
windows partition to dual boot to.

Yes, I have no problem with that. the key point is to keep the
OS separate from the apps and data.
