Subject: [os2genau] St George Bank locks users out of Internet banking

Hi,
Following your story:
http://www.smh dot com dot au/news/0104/30/bizcom/bizcom5.html

I thought this would be of interest to you:

On Sunday 29th April, St George Bank "upgraded" their Internet Banking
facility only to work with Netscape 4.74->4.77 browsers. The only
problem was they gave no notice of this change nor researched if all
their customers were in a position to "upgrade" to NS 4.74, effectively
locking customers out of Internet banking.

St George's Web site claim Netscape has dropped support for anything
less than 4.74, & in a knee-jerk reaction, coded their Internet banking
to not accept 4.61, a common version used extensively by ANZ Bank.

Most people are looking to migrate to the Standards-based NS 6.0 browser
if they are currently running any version of NS 4.x. IBM haven't
bothered with the NS 4.7 strain, instead leveraging the open-source
Mozilla code to release a NS6 code-based browser.

No other Bank has implemented such draconian action as St George has.
ANZ, Commonwealth, Adelaide Bank still accept earlier browsers.

Customers of BankSA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of St George Bank were
also effected.
Formal complaints by its customers have either been ignored or put in
the "forwarded to the appropriate department for consideration..."

I have scrubbed the dreadful HP jet Admin and set up both HP2100TN printers as
LPD ports

192.168.1.130 - LPT4
192.168.1.140 - LPT6

and things seems OK and I hope this will cure the problem I wonder if it was to do
with Jet Admin and sending page breaks to the printer?

Subject: [os2genau] OS/2 SIG Meeting Report 24 Apr 2001

OS/2 SIG Meeting Report for April 2001
by John Angelico 9544 8792 (with copy to the SIG members)

Well, numbers for our April meeting were more like what we were used to, with at least 20 members gathered.

Latest Headlines
We began with the excellent news that eComStation developments have made great progress and the final code is likely to be committed
to manufacturing within about a week of the meeting date. Allowing for production and distribution time, this means that the new OS
should be generally available well before the end of May.

We reported that the entire installation program had been thoroughly overhauled and was even more polished than when we saw the beta
demonstration in February. Installation for sound cards and networking had also been automated so that the entire install from CD is now
between 5 and 10 minutes (depending on selected options), and requires only one reboot.

This led to discussion about the present state of drivers. Video, networking and even sound-card drivers are no longer a problem, drivers for
Twain-compatible SCSI scanners have recently been upgraded again, USB and DVD support is steadily expanding and the famous Ray
Gwinn SIO serial port drivers are back on the development path. There has been a recent and most welcome resurgence of OS/2
development, spurred on by the progress with eCS.

Problem-solving Q&A
As a demonstration that even experienced OS/2ers get caught, I asked for help with a printing problem: black backgrounds on all my
pages. The answer was that it was an old video-related bug (which I had forgotten) and I needed to reset my default folder background
back to the system default of white. Sure enough, that fixed my problem - I had changed too many system defaults at once, and forgotten
to check the results of my changes properly.

OS/2 News Sources
We have seen a restoration of news feeds similar to the well-loved WarpCast service, and have suddenly discovered that we have two to
choose from. I had offered to put the news feed into the online mailing list, but that was vetoed in favour of supplying the URL for people to
sign up for themselves. In summary, the VoiceNews service is fed through eCSNewsCast and people only need to subscribe to one of them.

Make A Note of IT!
Following a break, we introduced our guest presenter and SIG member Antony Shepherd, a Lotus Notes consultant to larger-than-average
businesses.

He first showed a Slide-Show Demo of Notes to familiarize us with the Notes screens and terminology, and then installed and
demonstrated Lotus Notes for us.

The fundamental concept of Notes is the filing cabinet as the central repository of all data for a defined group of people. This group can be
anything from an individual looking after their own email or a SIG with a collected set of support information for the benefit of newcomers
right up to an international corporation with huge data storages to be shared among their employees.

Notes operates completely in a Client-Server mode, where the data is stored, managed and protected centrally, but available for access by
all authorized people, regardless of their location. Tools such as Replication make it a simple task to extract a copy of essential data, store it
on a local machine (either a laptop for mobile access, a departmental server for speed of retrieval in one group, or a desktop for local
access by one person).

Notes manages the state of the data in all locations so that amendments can be Replicated/Updated in logical consistent ways, and then
Propogated to others as they need it, or made available for full-text and indexed searching.

Notes also handles the authorization of people for access to the data to varying and quite complex levels of permission. Depending on
business arrangements, some people may have permission to view and update say customer names and addresses, and view but not
update personnel information.

Antony demonstrated by connecting to his home machine (set up as a Notes server) and confirming his authorization before accessing
data.

The Lotus Notes Mail CD we received in our Warp 4 boxes represents one of the applications available from a range of thousands.
Developers and consultants such as Antony design such applications entirely in Notes using forms designers, workflow tools and more,
applying business rules to the capture, storage and shared dissemination of data within and outside of an organization or unit.

By way of illustration, we discussed possible use of our copies of Notes Mail within the SIG to provide a central repository for all mailing list
messages in a search Notes database, on a server accessible to all users.

Each SIG member using Notes could then define their own selection criteria, and download only those messages they were personally
interested in. Their replies would be sent back to the Notes Mail server for storage and access by everyone else. The SIG Mail database
server would also allow us to search the archives for older messages dealing with topics of interest.

The illustration generated extensive discussion and many interesting comments, although it would require some effort to set up the server
correctly to meet all the potential requirements put forward on the night.

We closed the meeting with thanks to Antony, but discussion continued - a sure sign that his Notes presentation was well received!

Best regards
John Angelico

You have FAT32 on the same machine ?? (If you're accessing
