Hi Daryl

NAB Internet Banking "was" Windows only Java when I
last looked, so I'm still using NAB's Online Direct Dial package.

I has been almost a year since I looked but if you follow the
instructions on their website, and it doesnt work, I would
call it a los and leave it at that but on the off chance you are
successful, please let us know :-))

Greetings,
Has anyone done quantitative analysis on how much energy various type of
computers run as servers use?

ie no monitor, just the CPU box.

Is it reasonable to have a typical figure for a server, or does it vary
dramatically depending on different HDD configurations, usage &
processor type?

hi daryl,

lomg time.

The quick and dirty method is to assume the worst case, and use the VA (Volt Amp)
rating of the power supply. ie a 250VA supply is a 250W (give or take due to the
cosine of the angular difference bewteen Volt and Current).

If you are really keen, then you can sit down with the manufactures data and get board
requirements, CPU, Memory cards etc etc.. add up the max values and add up the median
values, that would be more accurate, but painstaking as configurations will affect the
values slightly.

Of course activity would also contribute to the power draw, hard drives spinning up
will pull a bag of electrons out of the supply (actually seen as spikes on the power
supply load), where as ones that are spinning all the time only have a start up draw
and then need little current to maintain the spin.

Alright, you have a synopsis of the basics, proceed as you wish with this info

regards

I am unsure... I will ask some of the people sitting next to me who
'needed' their P500Mhz, P600Mhz machines running windows NT.

I currently THREADS set to 1024. I will try it at 4095 for a test run.

My setting is currently MAXWAIT=2, and at some time last year I have run at
1 for a test.

Hi Ian.

> Wouldnt even worry about RAM detection patches with IBM
> machines :-)

Yes, I don't seem to need the patch. I assume OS/2 is using the PS/2
routines or something? Do you know what method it would use on this type
of PC?

> What is the PC300's actual model number ?

Type 6587 Model 79T

> What graphics driver are you using ?
> The S3 genuine part or Gengrad, or SDD ?

The chipset is: S3 86C 765 2Meg Trio64V+

I have used the 3.03.21 and 3.03.29 drivers for the Trio64V+ available for
this model of PC from the www.pc.ibm dot com support site. I have also used
the IBMse versions 7.0.?, 7.0.2, 7.0.3, of SDD.

I did not see a change, with regards to the memory problem happening, when
testing the different versions of video drivers.

> Also try it only with the 4 x 32Mb SIMM's for a while, there can

I have run with just the 128M (4 x 32M) and the problem still happens.

> Power Supply, its amazing how many startup faults that can be
> traced to the power supply :-)

When I swapped the internals I did everything except the IDE hard drive, so
the power supply was swapped.

> Did you swap the SIMM's and DIMM ? OS/2 is more choosy and

A few months prior to the replacement of the internals I swapped the DIMM
and SIMMS with some spares from two other machines of the same model.

> less tolerant of RAM faults, also make sure that you are using the
> correctly matched physical RAM, ie, gold contact socket, make sure

The match is ok. The DIMM is gold in a gold socket, and the SIMMs are tin
in tin sockets. It is all EDO 60ns. With this machine the notching is
pretty specific so that only the proper memory will fit, and these parts
match the specs for the machine.

I downloaded the IBM diagnostics and ran memory tests overnight which did
not detect any problems. These run under PC-DOS off self booting floppies.

> The latest netscape with FP15 and with the NS46DRAG.DLL file

I have experienced the problem right after a bootup and before Netscape has
been started, so this seems to clear NS from my particular problem. For
the more normal Netscape problems I have yet to rename the NS46DRAG.DLL on
this machine, but have done it on my others last week.

> Other tricks to try, boot from some OS/2 disks, and delete your

I had a FAT partition C: which has now twice been formatted to HPFS with /L
and OS/2 allowed to create a new 128M SWAPPER at bootup.

I haven't done that yet.

These are currently set at:

MAXWAIT=2
MEMMAN=SWAP,PROTECT
THREADS=1024

Sysbar/2 shows the PC usually using around 200-250 threads.

I could do some testing with NOSWAP, attempt to not use all available RAM,
and see if my problem still occurs.

> Could you send me your c:\config.sys and c:\startup.cmd files
> as well ? (privately)

Yep.

> include your c:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd, and the syslevel.txt file
> created by running this command.

Yep.

I have also run this PC, prior to the rebuild and OS/2 reinstall, without
DOS support installed and with PROTECTONLY=YES set. Problem still occured.

I currently have:

BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /W /A:0 /!BM /!DSG /A:1 /!BM /!DSG

in CONFIG.SYS to switch off Bus Mastering and in the BIOS the IDE high
performance option is turned off. Setting this BIOS option on SEEMS to
cause my problem more frequently, but I need to play around some more to be
certain of that. In any case, even with this option disabled the problem
still occurs enough to be annoying in the least.

I have also experimented with disabling other BIOS options like PCI
bursting, Video shadowing, etc, with no effect towards fixing the problem.

I will send those files soon.

Bye,
Craig

I think the better performance I saw from the "old" PC300's
rather than the new PC300GLs was better Design, better harddisk
and external cache. After all processor speed ISN'T everything !

Try multiplying your screen resolution by your colour resolution
1024 * 960 * 3(24bit colour) = Close enough to 3Mb.
Wonder what I can do with the other 29Mb.

Hi Daryl,
When I was sizing a UPS I cut the mains lead and stuck an ampmeter in.
My lanserver pentium 233 box with 4 HD's only drew 153 watts. (no monitor).
I have a Dell poweredge 1400 and will check that too before it goes on the UPS.

I gave up on banks years ago -after I realized that I was paying them to hold petty
cash.

The credit union I use has banking pages that were said to work only with windows and
Mac. However they work fine under OS/2!!

well, the other 29MB is a place to hide the next frame whilst viewing the first...
since each would consist of blocks of 3MB, then about 10 frames could be held..

this 'buffer' technique is used in many games and video software for smoother on screen
action

Hi everyone,

Does anyone use Lotus Smartsuite Approach?
If so, is it possible to get it to work like Office Access when typing in
information?
When typing in the same words, Access flashes up the entire word and you
can go to the next information field thus saving a lot of time.
Approach doesn't do that.
I have looked at macros but they don't seem helpful.

Perhaps you could look at a look up table connected to the field you are typing into..

you'll need to make it accept new values when you type new words, that should give the
behavior you seek
