I used to run Slackware in X on my 386/40 so don't give up hope yet.  Just 
don't run a bloated window manager like KDE or GNOME or Enlightenment, etc.  I 
ran twm and Afterstep and was very happy, had a 1024x768 screen, too, and this 
was back in 1994.
