On the Deskpro 286e that I was working with, I just plugged in an IDE
drive and formatted it to whatever specs it was set for with the drive
that was original in the system (which was crashed).  It didn't format it
to full capacity (only whatever capacity the original drive was) but if
optimizing the space on the drive is not a care for you then it doesn't
matter.  You just have to make sure you're using a drive that has a larger
capacity than the original disk.
