With some chips you can do that, setting the input bias by reference
to the output, the 4007 buffer was commonly used that way, making a
useful high-gain amplifier.  4000-series chips are useful in other ways,
the 4066 quad switch has found a new lease of life as a high performance
RF mixer, for example.
