how to kludge a 486 PC into thinking it has a video card?

Yes, I would agree, suck it and see.  I run 4 486s headless*, although
only one has no video at all.  All mine have the option of booting
without video or keyboard.

* 3 run DOS (one pretends to be a PDP-11 and another a TU-58 tape, just to
get a little more on-topic...) and 1 runs Linux as a print server.
