There seems to me a qualitative difference between agreeing ahead of time to
go in on a lot, and changing tactics once bidding has begun.

However, I have, occasionally, stopped bidding, with the hope of buying part
of the lot later, from whoever wins it.  (In these cases, I am careful to
carry the risk of losing the item, rather than collude with another buyer
who is bidding.)
