People ahve built 'pooe man spectrum analysers' based on varicap TV 
tuners, possibly with another converter stage on the front (although the 
bare UHF tuner can normally be persuaded to cover the 70cms band).

I was given a 3rd-party spectrum analyer plug-in for my 500-series. It's 
got those new-fangled IC things in it, and covers 800MHz to 1.7GHz. Not a 
terribly useful band for me, but worth saving IMHO.
