A HSC is a Hirarchical Storage Controler. It connects disks and tapes to
a VAX cluster via CI (Cluster / Computer Interconnect). CI is the stuff
you need this "Star Couplers" for. (IIRC the PDP-10 used CI too,
possibly before it came down to the VAXen.) A HSC presents itself to the
cluster as a cluster node as every other computer in the cluster but it
provides only storage device access. The interface from the HSC to the
actual storage device can variate. It may be SDI, SMD, SCSI, ... AFAIK
the first HSCs where PDP-11 based.
