Just a follow-up message for anybody who was interested:

The SX-64 I mentioned being at work has an I/O module attached to it, on
a ribbon cable coming out of the back.  The module is a plastic box that
looks like it would plug into the cartridge slot on a C-64, but is on a
ribbon cable extender in this application.

It's labeled:

The module has screwdriver terminal pairs labelled to attach six relay
(probably dry contact) outputs and two opto-isolated inputs.  It has the
look of something that's been bolted to the plywood text fixture for
years, probably decades.  Today the SX-64 was running an application
today connected to it.

Just thought Commodore enthusiasts might be interested in this
additional info.  I could see about photographing it if there was
interest.  I searched the web a bit, and found a photograph of the VIC
REL here:
