In the late 70's-early 80's I was working on a processor controller for 
which we received three fairly fundamental patents, one of which 
covered this technique (see US patent  4,660,141). Unfortunately, we 
had to scrap most of what we came up with in order to get a product out 
the door and pay the rent. All work was simulated on a VAX730...
