I agree 100%. I suspect that it's not an organism at all, but
merely breakdown of the stuff that bonds the faceplate to the
tube.
Automobile windshields pretty much all exhibit a similar
phenomenon; they get foggy (white) at the corners. It's known to
be deterioration/oxidation of the plastic layer.
Plastics degrade all the time.
But we need someone to test the "mold", which will be tough.
