Self-winding?  Do you mean an electrically powered pendulum clock?
That could be a Synchronome or something analogous.

Not much to it.  It's basically a switch connected to a solenoid.
There probably are two bolts or the like on it, where you'd connect
the power.  Try a flashlight battery (a couple if one isn't enough),
or, if you're paranoid, a regulated power supply with current limiting
so you can avoid generating smoke if there is a short somewhere.
