What is a Word Processing Program?

You can consider your word processing system (program plus
computer) as a typewriter equipped with built-in scissors, paste
and correction fluid and designed to function as a copier as
well. This means that you'll never have to rewrite a page
because it contained an error. Instead, you simply correct the
error. And if you want to send the same letter to a number of
people, the word processing program will copy the letter for
you. All you have to do is change the name and address. Sounds
great, doesn't it? You'll be surprised to find how much time and
work your word processing program will save.

Generally speaking, a word processing program functions in the
same way as a highly sophisticated typewriter. You don't have to
interrupt your work in any way when a line fills up or a page
becomes full. Your word processing program advances
automatically to a new line or a new page. And by using the many
special effects available on your printer - such as italics,
boldface, underlining and special characters - you can create
professional, attractively styled letters.

Moreover, it's easy to indent text, provide a straight right-
hand margin, center text, etc. And you can look over your work
before you print a single page, since your letter is shown on
the screen. What's more, you can rearrange it as desired before
printing. This means that in the future, you'll never have to
check-read texts that have been written by others, corrected by
others and (perhaps) delayed by others. Thanks to your word
processing program, you'll now be able to control the entire
process yourself.
