HIGH CAPACITY DIGITAL SERVICE

High Capacity Digital Service (HCDS) is

a dedicated high volume voice or data

transmission system. It is a basic

transport service offering transmission

capabilities for either voice or data

by capitalizing on T-carrier

technology.

With a bandwidth of 1.544 Mbps, High

Capacity Digital Service can provide

the same functionality as multiple
^
voice or data communication lines

between two locations.

In fact, High Capacity Digital Service

provides the same capability as 24

voice lines and Enhanced High Capacity

Digital Service (EHCDS) provides

multiplexing of 24 or 48 voice channels

over a single 1.544 Mbps line. Other

channel derivation arrangements for

data can be provided on request.

^

The real advantage of Enhanced High

Capacity Digital Service is dealing

with one vendor and the lower equipment

expenditures. Multiplexers in the

Pacific Bell Central Office (CO) or on

the customer premises split Enhanced

High Capacity Digital Service bandwidth

into needed channels. Before Enhanced

High Capacity Digital Service,

customers were required to provide

their own multiplexers.

^

The guaranteed performance of High

Capacity Digital Service exceeds 95

percent error-free seconds of

transmission over a 24 hour period.

Also, availability is more than 99.7

percent over a one year period.

Pacific Bell supports this service with

full 24-hour maintenance in the company

locations.

^

The flexibility of High Capacity

Digital Service is indicated

in that it can accept timing from

either the Pacific Bell Network or

customer provided equipment (CPE).
