CUSTOMER CONTROLLED NETWORK MANAGEMENT

Customer Controlled Network Management

allows easily managed, remote

reconfiguration and surveillance

capability to our private line network

customers, by giving customers the

ability to dynamically allocate the

fixed bandwidths within 1.544 Mbps

facilities and electronically cross-

connecting those bandwidths to

accommodate individual voice and data

needs.^

Customer Controlled Network Management

will be based in our central offices

and will utilize programmable frames

(digital cross-connect systems) on

which customer 1.544 Mbps facilities

will terminate on channelized access

ports. One digital cross-connect

switch can handle up to 127 1.544 Mbps

lines.

^

Individual channels of voice and data

riding on any of the 24 fixed

bandwidths within the 1.544 Mbps can be

cross-connected, taken down or looked

at for maintenance via customer remote

access to a partition of the frame's

microprocessor's memory. Access is

made with any dial-up or dedicated

terminal, or personal computer, at 1200

bps and will remain completely secure

using unique identification codes.
^

Customer changes and inquiries will be

effected through user friendly commands

and routines common to the system.

Also, new customers can be added to the

system without interrupting service or

breaking existing cross connections..

Some customer benefits of Customer

Controlled Network Management include:

increased flexibility in gearing

network to meet voice and data needs,

cost-effective network utilization,
^

improved performance and failure

detection with automatic backup, and

decreased dependency on customer

provided equipment. This service

provides Pacific Bell's answer to

customer demands for direct control

with flexibility, and quick and easy

provisioning.

^

One application of Customer Controlled

Network Management would be to vary how

private communications facilities are

used to support voice and data traffic

based upon time of day.
