This copy was shipped on: 800 bpi mag tape. Mag tape is in UNIX
"tp" format. RK05 disks are in standard 6th edition file system
format. 7th edition users should use the appropriate utilities
for reading or converting the file system. PWB users will find
that the extra word in the super-block which holds the free space
count is zero. RK05 receipients please note: We suggest that
you copy the data off the RK05 pack. You should not modify the
distribution pack. Then, if you make any changes, you will have
a master copy of the original distribution. All update notices
will refer to line numbers in the original files.

The quickest installation procedure is as follows:
          1) Extract all files from the directory "bin". Install:
                  /bin/ru
                  /usr/bin/rtcom
                  /bin/rted
                  /usr/bin/rtpip
(The last two are handy programs. "ru" and "rtcom" comprise
          the RT/EMT distribution binaries.)

                                                                Page 2

          2) Install librt11/errs in /lib/rt11/errs.

          3) Install RT-11 utilities in /lib/rt11/dk0. The program
"rtpip" may be used to read RT-11 media in order to get
copies of the files. (If you obtained your RT-11 license
through HCR, then librt11/dk0 will contain the appropriate
binaries. Otherwise, dk0 will be empty and you will have to
use rtpip to read your own copy.) Remember: you require a
DEC license to run the DEC software. The following should
          be installed.
                  cref.sav
                  dir.sav
                  dump.sav
                  edit.sav
                  edit.tec
                  fortra.sav
                  help.sav
                  help.tec
                  help.txt
                  libr.sav
                  link.sav
                  macro.sav
                  patch.sav
                  pip.sav
                  srccom.sav
                  sysf4.obj
                  syslib.obj
                  sysmac.sml
                  tecend.sav
                  teco.com
                  teco.sav
                  veg.tec
                  vt52.tec

          4) The directory "test" contains various test programs. If
you try the tests, make sure that the directories are write-
able to you. If a test program asks you to enter a number
of characters, type the requested number plus a newline. If
you have any problems, consult the maintenance and installa-
          tion manuals.

          5) These binaries should run on a reasonably standard 6th
edition UNIX. Certain assumptions are made about the loca-
tions of several files (e.g. line printer spooler
"/bin/opr".) If you have any trouble, you should make the
appropriate changes (see maintenance documentation) and re-
          install.

The following is a list of the various parts of the RT-11 pack-
     age.

     bin - pre-compiled binaries.
     cinterp - command interpreter source
     docu - documentation
     emt - RT-11 emulator source
librt11 - files to be installed in /lib/rt11
misc - source for other miscellaneous programs
     test - test data

                                                                Page 3

In the various directories you may find files named "read_me",
"run", "print", and "makefile". "Read_me" files contain informa-
tion which should be read before doing anything with the other
files in the directory. "Run" files contain the sequence of com-
mands which will generate a new binary copy of the source. "Run"
files do a "cmp" of the result with the installed binary.
"Print" files will either produce a source listing or run off
     documentation, on the standard output.

"Makefile" files ARE NOT IN PWB MAKE FORMAT. These files use the
University of Toronto "make" program (not supplied.) The
makefiles document the dependancies between various source and
binary files, in a fairly obvious way.

     Possible installation problems:

If your system uses system call number 59 (unused in standard
UNIX), you will have to recompile. See the manuals.

If you use Fortran or EDIT, you should install the "trapcatch"
feature. Both the Fortran run-time support and EDIT execute TRAP
instructions. The emulator needs an assist from some simple UNIX
modifications to handle this. See the manuals and misc/read_me.

When you install RT-11 software, make sure it is configured for
your processor model. (Programs like PIP are not a problem, but
you have to watch out for things like Fortran floating point
     options.)

If you are fortunate enough to have 7th edition UNIX, you will
need to recompile RT/EMT. It uses 6th edition seek, stat, stty,
     etc.

     Final notes:

Just before this distribution was prepared, a new compilation
option was added to the emulator. If "BIGMEM=1" in emt/assem0.s,
a larger memory version of the emulator is produced. This ver-
sion puts itself in the highest possible memory (stack segmenta-
tion registers--up to 32Kw) and allows 24Kw for user space. We
recommend that you only compile such a version for programs that
need it, since UNIX swaps less if its processes are smaller.
(This option was installed to allow the University of Toronto
     SP/K system to run.)
