Not really surprising:  As much as computing power has increased, software 
complexity has increased right along with it.  Everything you mentioned is a 
software issue.

There are exceptions for both past and future, of course (for example, MS-DOS 
boots in 10 seconds off of a Shugart... and there are modern OSes that boot in 
30 seconds and positively scream) but you get the idea.
