How will this prevent bounces?  They need to reply to the confirmation email to 
join, proving that their email won't bounce.

NOT GOOD!!  Please consult sendmail RFCs and best practices.  That is not 
standard practice and will result in a lot of people not getting email.  Should 
I lose email if my ISP messes up routing for 2 hours?  RFC states four days!
