Possibly just crap on the front of the camera which is confusing the
hell out of the autofocus? It used to happen to the Fuji camera I had
before my current one (which used to get hauled along to all sorts of
wartime sites and subjected to dust, dirt, water and who-knows-what)

My newer camera's like that; the battery lasts for ages (I use it an
awful lot, and it still lasts a couple of weeks between charges).

The Fuji used to eat batteries like there was no tomorrow, though.
