That's what pdf2ps is for... Ghostscript is quite portable, if not
particulary cycle-efficient or memory-conserving.

The whole concept of storing bitmaps in PDF's or postscript files seems
somewhat counterintuitive, still, to me.  It's a bitmap, why not just
keep it around as a bitmap?  (Yes, I know the answer is "most free bitmap
viewers suck".)
