Don't know about your monitor, but mine (Sony GPD-400) is shielded well enough 
that I actually tried that with a formatted 360K floppy disk and it survived. 
Of course, you may have just been joking :)

To the original poster: Radio Shack has cheap ($12) degaussers, IIRC...
