The one that *really* drives me nuts is people who, rather than using an
ASCII smiley, use a goddam image of a smiley linked from a website -
argh! 

ASCII isn't limited at all if people do make use of smileys and such as
*...* for emphasis (of course carefully-composed text doesn't need any
of that at all to convey meaning either, but it does help somewhat for
quick replies IMHO)
