If you use IE to browse the web, you can get viruses and spyware without
even explicitly downloading anything.

Yet another reason why I don't use IE.  (Or Windows, for that matter.)

Every once in a while an exploit is found for a non-IE browser, and they
get fixed quickly, though it's still up to the user to keep up to date.
But IE is like swiss cheese (and not in a good way).  Microsoft sometimes
takes more than a year to fix a well-known exploit.
