Before you blame the seller, is it possible that there *was* padding on
top of the terminal and it came flying out the side of the box when it
was damaged? 

In other words, possible it was crushed somewhere in transit, ripping
the side open, and so some moron just put lots of tape on it and threw
it back on the pile - where it was subsequently crunched by something?

I don't know about your postal service, but over here they go out of
their way to mangle stuff as much as possible :-(
