plastic and tiny holes are punched into it which obviously are a lot more
stable then the tiny magnets of a platter and just like the old punch cards
or paper tape the system reads the opens and closes as 1's and 0's to read
the data.   Now this is a mechanical process so you would like it would be
slow, be apparently in this micro-scale its super fast.    To "erase" the
data the field is heated up until liquid and cools to a smooth surface
again...  this is just a rough overview and not 100% accurate accounting of
the technology.
