I am too - I have exactly the same plan, and on a dual G4 ;)

John - please could you elaborate on a) what USB<->serial adapter you
used*, b) the necessary changes to /etc/ttys, c) which OS X version you
got this working under?

* since I don't have one yet, it'd be better to buy one which is known to
work.
