Incidentally, the Apple ][ also uses the screen buffer ($400-$800) as a
temporary disk buffer, but only the portions of the RAM that are not
mapped to the screen (there are actually 64 bytes in the buffer that you
don't see on the screen and that can be used for temporary data storage).
This is true with DOS 3.3.  I'm not sure about ProDOS.
