WORD PROCESSING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PDP-11 AND WS-78 A) SIGNING ON TO A SYSTEM 1) Turn OFF, then ON, the WS-78 or WT-78. 2) Hit the key, you should now get a curser symbol ">" . If no symbol, try again. If several attempts to get the ">" symbol fail, contact the SYSTEM MANAGER in CS Staff. 3) Type HELLO staff-TERMx where staff is the Staff id and x is the terminal id. (example HELLO CDF-TERM1) 4) Type your password (if none, hit carriage return key). If a password is desired, contact the SYSTEM MANAGER in CS. 5) Hit blue button on the side of the Machine when told. 6) Choose either "T" or "S" if a WS-78 (WT-78 is T, no choice) a) If "S" is entered, then the WS-78 is in stand-alone mode, i.e., all information and documents are received from diskettes on the stand-alone system. b) If "T" is entered, then the user wishes to be connected to the PDP-11 system for word processing, i.e., all information and most documents are on the PDP-11 computer. B) DIFFERENCES IN THE WS-78 STAND-ALONE WORD PROCESSING SYSTEM 1) If the "S" option was chosen, then the use of the word processor as a stand-alone unit remains the same. C) DIFFERENCES IN THE PDP-11 WORD PROCESSING SYSTEM 1) If the "T" option was selected, the following are differences: a) Sign on to word processing; to sign on, do the following: L (chose the login option) NAME (identify yourself by NAME (see PDP-11 SYSTEM MANAGER PASSWORD (for NAMES AND PASSWORDS) b) The menu option "TD". This option allows a user to transfer documents to and from a WS-78 diskette to the PDP-11 area. c) Use the "LD" and "AD" options under the "EDITOR MENU" to establish your LIBRARY and ABBREVIATION documents. The change affects all your documents. (there is no area zero available where the user can set up the LIBRARY and ABBREVIATION documents. d) To print documents on the high speed printer, when in the PRINT MENU, do "DD LP" to change the document destination to the high speed printer. (the * means your default printer, which is the regular printer you use. e) There is a limit of 200 documents on each storage area. To get additional areas, see the PDP-11 SYSTEM MANAGER. As of January, 1981, each user has three areas; area 1 is the normal area in use; area 2 is an area to be used as an inbox mail area where mail from other Staffs and Forests will appear; area 3 is the outbox area, where documents are placed for electronic transmission to other Staffs or Forests. To access areas other than one (1), prefex the number of the area followed by a period to the document name, for example "I 2" indexes area 2, "E 3.XYZ" edits document XYZ in area 3, "C 3.FCCC" creates a document in the outbox area 3, etc. MAIL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PDP-11 at the RO INTRODUCTION Each Regional office staff has SIX USER areas, and TWO MAIL areas. The areas are named XXXX-USER1 through XXXX-USER6, XXXX-INBOX and XXXX-OUTBOX, where XXXX is the distribution code listed in the NAME column in the APPENDIX. The names are used for signing onto WORD PROCESSING and/or DATA PROCESSING, for example "WAS-USER1". The USER areas are to be used for everyday WORD PROCESSING activities. The INBOX and OUTBOX areas are only to be used for MAIL activities. Each USER has access to the two document areas set up for MAIL in WORD PROCESSING along with one of the SIX USER areas. Area 1; the USER area which can be used for creating up to 200 documents. Area 2; the INBOX area from which USERS can expect their mail from other USERS. Area 3; the OUTBOX area to which USERS send documents which are to be sent to other USERS. To observe what documents are in the USER, INBOX and OUTBOX areas, do while in WORD PROCESSING mode: "I" "I 2" "I 3" and the index for the documents in areas 1, 2 and 3 respectively, appear. INBOX ACCESS: To obtain an index of INBOX documents, do "I 2" when logged into a USER area, MAIN MENU status. After noting what documents exist, then either read, print and/or copy the documents over to the USER area, after which, delete all the documents from the INBOX area. It is a USER responsibility to keep the INBOX area as clean (empty) as possible, otherwise the SYSTEM MANAGER will erase long dormant documents. To copy a document, create a document in the USER area, then do G , then enter the document name in the form "2.n" where n is the document number. OUTBOX ACCESS: To enter a document into an OUTBOX area, first create it in the USER area. Then to send the document to the OUTBOX area, proceed by the method shown below starting from the MAIN MENU: C 3.name1,name2,...,namex G Name of document in USER area F where name1,name2,...,namex are the distribution codes listed in the NAME column in the APPENDIX. Note: if in creating name1, the name already exists as a document, then the user may place a number directly after the name so as to have a unique name, e.g, CS1 instead of CS. NOTE: When accessing documents from the INBOX area, always use the document number. For example: "2.4" is document 4 of the INBOX area. When creating a document for the OUTBOX area, if the USER wished to include another distribution code, or remove a code, then the USER could edit document "3.1" to make the indicated change. That document is the index document for the OUTBOX area. EXAMPLE: INBOX ACCESSING ASSUMPTIONS: Knowledge of WORD PROCESSING on PDP 11/70 A WP account established at RO One document in the INBOX account received NOTE: Dark type is USER entries Items within <...> indicate a single keystroke PROCEDURE: Sign on to the WORD PROCESSING system using a USER account. To do this, use "P 2.2" and print it locally on your printer. After printing, use "D 2.2" to delete the document. To save the document on your USER area, since INBOX areas will be erased every now and then by the SYSTEM MANAGER, do the following: C (a name not yet used) !create a document in your area !press the gold key and the G key 2.2 !enter document number from the INBOX !Press the gold key and the f key The document is now in the USER area. Now delete it from the INBOX area as was shown above. EXAMPLE: OUTBOX ACCESSING ASSUMPTIONS: Knowledge of WORD PROCESSING on PDP 11/70 A WP account established at RO NO document in the OUTBOX account NOTE: Dark type is USER entries Items within <...> indicate a single keystroke PROCEDURE: Sign on to the WORD PROCESSING system using a USER account. L !enter logon option WAS-USER1 !enter a USER identification To enter a letter into the OUTBOX, first create it in the USER area. Then after it is correct, note what destination codes (found in the NAME column of the APPENDIX) are to be used in sending the letter to other staffs and units. Create a document in area 3, the OUTBOX area, with the names of the destinations, separated by commas, as shown below (assuming RF and CS staffs delivery). A copy will be sent to the issuing user. C 3.RF,CS1 *** Note that CAPITAL letters are used. To transfer that letter into the OUTBOX, do the following: !press gold then G key to get document (name of letter in USER area) !enter same name used to create it !press gold then F key to file document Do an index to see what is in the OUTBOX area: I 3 Area: 3 (WP:[100,70]), # of Docs: 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Document Elapsed Time Number Name Created Modified Size Version Last Total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 RF,CS1 9/26/80 9/26/80 16:39 1 1 0:01 0:01 1 9/26/80 9/26/80 16:41 2 1 0:00 0:00 There now exists one document which will be sent to RF and CS staffs. To correct the destination, edit document 1 and change the appropiate line. Note that the destination code is in CAPITAL letters. Note that after the OUTBOX account is accessed by the MAILMAN program, ALL documents in the OUTBOX will de deleted. It is up to the USER to have originals in other accounts if they are to be retained.
