MSG-- Inter-user Message Transfer Utility Users may send mesages to themselves or others using an inter-user message transfer utility, MSG. MSG transfers messages in the form of notices and letters. Letters require replies, messages do not. MSG maintains a 'mailbox' for each user. Each message sent to a user is inserted into their mailbox. The mailbox is not in their UIC. Only the user receiving the message has access to it once it is deposited in their mailbox. The sender cannot retrieve the message. No unprivleged user can access the contents of any other unprivileged user's mailbox. Further HELP on using the MSG utility may be requested by entering HELP MSG keyword. Valid keywords are: NAMES Valid Last Names and Account Numbers. SEND Sending message to another user. SYSTEM Sending message to SYSTEM. RECEIVE Receiving message from another user. 2 SEND Messages may be sent by entering any of the following commands. MSG (filename)[/NO] TO (username) MSG TO (username) MSG If a filename is entered, it must be the valid RSX filename of the file that you wish to send. When a filename is entered, the /NO can be added meaning that the file contains a notice that does not need a reply. Otherwise, MSG will prompt the receiving user for a reply. If filename is omitted, the system prompts for you to enter your message with LETTER>. At this time, the user may enter up to 120 characters per line followed by a . Text lines may be entered in this manner until finished with the message. Then, the user enters a /Z to end of the message. MSG will then ask if you want a reply after you have entered the message. Enter YES or Y if you want a reply to your letter, enter NO or N if you don't want a reply to your notice. If username is omitted, the MSG prompts you with TO WHO? so you can enter a username. Valid usernames are either the user's last name or their account number specified as either [G,M], [G/M], or G/M. MSG will prompt for additional usernames until you enter /Z. Enter HELP MSG NAMES for a list of valid last names and account numbers. 2 RECEIVE MSG can be put in your LOGIN.CMD file by the system manager so you will be notified if there are any messages for you when you log on. You are automatically notified of messages that are sent to you if you are logged on when they are sent. The status of your mailbox may be displayed at any time by entering MSG ?. The number of messages waiting for you will be displayed. You may receive messages by entering MSG ME. The system prefixes each message with the date, UIC of the sender, and the sender's last name. After viewing, MSG will prompt you with SAVE THIS MESSAGE? If you want to transfer the message to your file, enter YES or Y. MSG will then prompt you with MAILBAG NAME? You then enter a filename that will contain the message in your UIC. If you do not want to save the message, enter NO or N. If you want the message to stay in your mailbox so you can view it again, enter . 2 SYSTEM Messages may be left for the system programer, Bohden K. Cmaylo by typing MSG TO CMAYLO. Messages relating to system problems, system performance, hardware problems, unexplained and troublesome error messages, etc. should be left in the system mailbox by typing MSG TO SYSTEM. 2 NAMES Here is a list of valid last names and account numbers as of April 82.
